Here’s to the feed truck. Able to abound over rough ranch roads. One door has no handle and I have to use both hands to force the drivers side window up. The steering wheel loose and I wonder if it will come off in my hands. The tires are held together with numerous plugs that resemble a bad haircut. The floor behind the seat a small child could fall through and you can cook a steak, if you sit right over the exhaust, but can’t live without it.
Wouldn’t want to take a new truck out to the pasture, to whimpified to make the haul. You’d hate to ram it over the small mesquite upon your husbands, “Go! Go! Go!” with a shotgun fumbled into position to get the shot, on a coyote loping across the pasture. Not to mention those times you’ve been out there without a horse and actually used the bumper to tie off, when doctoring a cow.
The rugged sucker, you’re surprised she made it up the mesa yet another time, cussing it when it left ya stranded to make the 7 mile hike back to headquarters ‘cause the fuel gauge doesn’t’ register but your love hate relationship speaks to you. You don’t know how it does but somehow you feel a little comforted when you hop in and smell WD40, old oil rags, and cake.
The ole’ gal’s axle broke the other day, probably due to the time I fell off in a huge hole in the creek bottom. It was covered by sacatone, which I know is a poor excuse but it happens. But you know what? ….. I miss her. Our current situation is fine but looks something like, someone drives, the other pours out feed from the back. In other words the Trip Hopper doesn’t fit! Bummer! Oh how I love the sound of the Trip Hopper.
She will be back, in a week or so, and I look forward to it. Back to the routine, rolling down the window to get out of the pickup, back to singing my own personal concert from the comfort of dog hair covered seats. Back to the familiar . Makes me more appreciative of her, I’m embarrassed to say I just teared up a little. It’s a ranch truck for goodness sake!!!
Maybe in your “familiar” life, you too have taken advantage of those around you. That ole’ guy you sit across from when you eat supper. Just kidding honey, just trying to get more subscribers, I think you’re a strappin’ young fella. Those kiddos when they trample in with muddy boots, the mother-in-law that shares her roll recipe, or your friend who always greets you at the feed store. It’s easy to forget how much you appreciate others and pretty easy to drift off into the land of kickin tires and throwing fencin pliers but don’t do it. Take the time today to appreciate all those in your life that you’re pretty glad to have around and hey even give that ole feed truck a little pat on the hood.
I am reminded to not take advantage of those around or for that matter the things I already have. These two verses put it plainly………..
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, Phil. 2:3
In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1Thes. 5:18
Even in the familiar we sometimes forget to be thankful for all we have. I hope tonight before we all go to sleep we can thank God, even for that ole feed truck. Please leave a comment below and sign up for my newsletter……thank you!!!!
