Sometimes I just blurt things out. Stupid things, unnecessary things, embarrassing things. I wish I could grab them midair and throw them over my shoulder before anyone hears. I can say, I am not a gossip….you cannot be when you are a pastor’s wife. When I say stupid things they are usual more awkward than anything. For example, I rushed into the bathroom at church, flung open a stall door to which I saw a lady who was visiting. I was so embarrassed I froze. What came out of my mouth…..”So glad you were here today”. Geez, no wonder she never came back!
Since the day of the awkward stall greeting, I have learned a little trick that filters most awkward thoughts before they come out of my mouth. The acronym T.H.I.N.K.
T: Is it True?
H: Is it Helpful?
I: Is it Inspiring?
N: Is it Necessary?
K: Is it Kind?
Was it true I was glad she was there?…yes.
Was it helpful….yes, I’m sure she appreciated it!
Was it inspiring? Well, maybe not at that moment…..
Necessary? O.k…..you got me, the timing was all wrong.
no need to go any further…..
Let’s just say they didn’t promote me to the welcoming committee at church. If you have the same problem that I have experienced, you may want to memorize, quote, and tape this little acronym all around the house. Unfortunately this won’t stop you from making any mistakes, but believe me it will cut down on awkward comments. Not only will this help how you speak to others but it can also help you filter out how you speak to yourself. James 3:5 tells about the power of our words. Now, go out with your filter on and be a blessing to some one!
Love God, love people! Have a great weekend!
