Our friend Dennis Yadon always says, “Another Perfect Day!”, usually he makes this comment after working cattle. When he first said it, I thought to myself…”What?”…the cattle ran off, someone got bucked off their horse, we changed two flat tires on the trailer. I pondered the remark. He didn’t seem to worried about what the day had held. He always means it when he says it. He always looks straight into our eyes not second guessing his decisive words, which by the way, comes with a huge grin. Also he wasn’t to worried about the confused look on my face after his statement…..he knew I’d get it eventually.
And that I did, after many times of plans changing, and working with Dennis and seeing him work with others, I finally figured out what he meant. I believe he feels completely satisfied in the work he does and the people he’s with. That’s the big picture in the scope of things. His definition is not contoured to the day but more the saying is stable no matter what the day holds. He was sure of working cattle, of family, of friends gathered…. of ropers missing in the pens, of grand kids learning to vaccinate or young buttons getting a chance to throw a few loops, in the absence of a harsher audience. He is always eager to help and give instruction. That perfect day is shaping up all right. In the presence of all the misfitted, off schedule, flat tired, shoe loosing horses, and misunderstood signals. It’s a perfect example of life right?
We had one of those days the other day. A pipe we intended to fix on the ranch, we intended being the emphasis. You know how that goes, you load every tool imaginable, the new sack of fittings and purple junk and glues, drive for miles, unload it all and tote it thru the pasture and barbed wire fence. And all that to find out that the cuplin’ you brought along was in the wrong bin at the hardware store. You probably would have noticed except you had a long list of town things and of coarse hurried along before getting sick of town. The disappointment could have caused cussing or throwing of tools but it did not. The day was beautiful…we had our grandson, we had a picnic. We hauled all supplies back to the truck…..we laughed at our mistake!
Checking a few ranch waters along the way and settling on a spot for a picnic proved it wasn’t a wash out. It was “Another Perfect Day”, despite knowing we’d have another item listed on the next town day. Despite the chunk of hair I tore out in the barbed wire while crawling through the fence. Despite the hauling of buckets of tools and purple pipe fitting junk spilling all over me and the back seat of the truck. It’s more about the people….it’s more about the process. It’s more about patience, and allowing yourself to make mistakes and learning something along the way.
So how about you? Do you never allow yourself to have, “Another Perfect Day”, or does one small thing pull the rest of the day into the trash? Does a flat tire, or the busted pipe, or the gal at work, or the husband that forgot your anniversary become the focus? I certainly understand…..been there, but what if we allowed for what life threw at us to be a benefit and didn’t allow it to steal away the day?
There’s something I didn’t mention about my friend Dennis, he and his wife Donna have a vibrant and transparent walk with Christ. It’s that love for Him, His word and living out that truth that makes the difference. Their perfect days are lined with the solid promises of God. They pray together, study together, and help each other. I admire them greatly! They are a light to many, as they live their perfect days and I thank them for showing me the meaning of such a wonderful saying.
And….here they are, ranch couple extraordinaire…..they just make me smile!!!
“But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.” KJV …. Proverbs 4:18
Thank you for reading my friends. I’d love to hear from you and what your doing today….on your, “Another Perfect Day”, please leave me a comment…….thecowboypastorswife
