I’m hooked on my prayer time. I only know this because when I neglect it…..I can see a major difference between my own reliance verses me relying on God! I don’t want my man to be wimpified, so I don’t want my prayers to be either. I want to cover him in meaningful and purposeful prayers. My intentions are to bring him before the throne of God. Now being the wife of a cowboy makes some of my prayers unique. But, no matter what your husband’s occupation, I hope these suggestions may be of some help.
- I pray over his work: I pray over the work of his hands. I remember a particular scripture I prayed as a young wife. Here it is…”Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.” Prov. 22:29. In praying this I believed and still do, that God will open opportunities that fulfill His best plans. I know God made my husband a cowboy, so I don’t want to change him. I do want him to be the best he can be at his job!!
- I pray over his day wages. During certain times of the year a cowboy can make a pretty good living, but when it’s not spring or fall, he is often filling in his income with taking in horses, building spurs, or anything else to make a living. In my case, my husband is also a pastor at a Cowboy Church. I pray we are content with what we have and are look for the right opportunities that fit within our God given talents if we need more income. “Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” Prov.10:4 and this one we prayed many times together……………….. “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:19
- I pray dominion over the livestock under his care. (Gen. 1:26) Whenever you see a few idiot horses you know how real this one is!!! I pray over my man’s horses. I pray they have sure feet for their work ahead and for their minds to be right. I also pray their partnership will be a bond that will help them accomplish whatever task they are pursuing.
- I ask God to give him the right kind of anger. Let’s face it, in the cowboy culture, most of us have seen the fight scene in the John Wayne movie, McLintock….one of my favorites!! But even though I love that scene from the movie, I don’t want them to mimic that everyday of his life!! I pray my husband doesn’t waste his time being mad at the wrong things. “The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Cor. 2:15-16 I want him to be angry when he see someone mistreated and stand up for the innocent. I want him to be angry when things like family, marriage, and God are thrown aside for values that don’t match the Word of God. I pray this type of anger motivates him to be a problem solver.
- I pray protection. Over him, his mind, his spirit. I pray protection over his thought life, our marriage, and our family. I pray God protects his leadership and integrity. I pray God gives him and myself, as his wife the good sense to do what’s right!
“But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.” Psalm 5:11
“Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you” Prov. 2:11
“The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all” Psalm 34:19
These are just some of the things I pray for but there are many others and depending on what’s going on in his life or our families’ life, I adjust to the need the best I can. Just keep in mind, you don’t have to know a bunch of scriptures to be able to pray. You don’t have to pray a certain way…it can be as simple as “Lord, bless my husband”. So many times God talks about our heart…so fancy words do nothing if we don’t mean it. I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone a little bit and try a few scriptures. I believe once you begin to grasp onto them you will love what they do for your life!!
I hope this has been helpful. Always…always love hearing from you.
Let me know how you pray for your husband. Thanks so much for reading…….thecowboypastorswife
