He had dropped us off in the drive. I would cut up to the top and my son would take the outside. As I went on my way, I began to really enjoy the day. My horse felt good and so did I. The sun was shining and I began to whistle a little. I topped out on the little mesa and continued looking both ways for cattle. All is well. On top I had a good view of my world. No cattle to be seen, I made my way to each point looking down into the draws. Still nothing. I had looked from time to time to see the rider to my right as we made the drive, looking to the left I still couldn’t see my son, due to thick brush. I began to think he had met up with the guys on the other side of the drive to help them out. After making our way towards the pens, our son came from behind. The torn shirt and disgusted look on his face told me I had failed him.
Shortly after starting the drive, he had a run in with a mad momma cow. She finally came at him full force knocking him off his horse and unto the ground. Not a good situation. I asked when it happened? He said, “Shortly after you started up the hill, I hollered for you to come help, but you didn’t hear me!” Whistlin’ women I was, jolly rancher….”no bueno!”
My situation may look similar to yours. You may be going through life whistlin’ away. Nothing wrong with that, but I had failed to do my part. I forgot about the other guy. I learned my lesson that day. I’m not saying I could have went and saved the day, I’m not that handy. I am saying one of the biggest rules in working cattle and working life, involves looking out for the guy next to you. What if you’re in a bind? What if you’re the one needing a little help? It only takes a minute to visualize friends who came to your rescue in a rough spot.
Here’s 3 Ways To Be Good Help:
1. Don’t Wait To Be Asked: Whether you need to help in the branding pen or help gather brands after a long day. Don’t wait to be asked. Look around and find something to do.
2. Do Your Work The Best You Can: Doing your own job will means others won’t have to do it for you. Cover your own country, do the best you possible can, so someone else doesn’t have to use their time, energy, and resources on something you’re responsible for.
3. Respect The Boss: You may not agree with how he makes the drive, works cattle, or how fast or slow he gets a job done. He’s the boss, respect his authority and be a good listener. Don’t talk behind his back and be thankful he signs the check.
Simple, I know. Probably something you may have heard. God has a job for us to do. Let’s do it well, not waiting to be asked, doing our best work, and respecting the boss.

“10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”
Think of someone who has been good help to you in the past. It can be a boss, or someone you just observed. Please share what they did and their name. Would love to hear from you.
